Caribbean Poker
Caribbean poker is unique in that it pits each player against the dealer. In traditional poker games each individual battles against the others at the table and the best player, at least for that game, wins. In this particular form of poker, every player that has a better hand than the dealer wins.
Before play begins, each individual is required to place an ante wager. They are then dealt five cards. Each card is placed face up so that everyone at the table can view them. The dealer also deals him or herself five cards. He or she will turn one card over so that it is face up. The remainder of their cards will be face down. Each player has to make their best guess about the strength of the dealer’s hand. If they believe that they have the better hand, they will need to challenge the dealer. If they do not, they should fold. If their hand turns out to be superior they win, if not, the dealer does.
Because only one of the dealer’s cards can be seen, individuals have no idea what cards their hand contains. If they believe, based on the card they can see, that their hand is superior, and want to proceed, they will need to press the ‘challenge’ button. This will alert the dealer that they want to compare hands. Conversely, if a person believes that the dealer has a better hand than they do, they will need to fold or surrender. When a person folds, they surrender their ante.
It is important to note that the dealer’s hand has to contain certain cards before a challenge can be accepted. Their hand must include both a King and an Ace. If it does not, then the challenge will not go forward and the player receives a 1:1 payout based on their initial wager. On the other hand, if the dealer’s hand does contain an Ace and a King, then the comparison of hands can proceed. If there is a tie, a player pushes and they receive their money back. If they win, they will receive a payout based on their particular hand.
A stronger hand guarantees the winner a bigger handout. For example, a person that has a Royal Flush will be win more than someone that has a two pair. To determine exactly what payout a person qualifies for, it will be necessary to check with the casino. However, on average a Royal Flush pays out 100 to 1, a Straight Flush 50 to 1, a Four of a Kind 20 to 1. As the hand rankings get smaller, do so the payout amounts.
